About this book
Coquette is by Frank Swinnerton. The contents list names, among others, Book One: Toby, Book Two: Gaga and Book Three: Consequences. Under the heading BOOK ONE: TOBY, the text sets a Saturday night in winter, with horse-omnibuses rattling by outside in the Hornsey Road.
Mrs. Minto puts the washstand beneath a patch that had been washed nearly white by splashes, and Sally insists that it stand in another part of the room. The text records that Sally returns each night to the miserable room in which for the present she was to spend her life. The text says neither Toby nor Gaga would have kept Sally waiting, and that Gaga had been standing at the corner already for five minutes. The text says that Gaga was the solution and could be made to believe almost anything.
