About this book
The title page calls the work a popular treatise on the growth of air craft and aëronautical meteorology, while the preface states its aim of portraying substantial progress in aëronautics. The preface says that, beyond the introductory account, experiments receive little attention when they constitute no advance in the art or lead to no useful result.
The account of Hänlein describes a project for driving a balloon with a gas engine fuelled from inside the balloon and replacing the loss with air pumped into the ballonet. The discussion of Chavez records the committee's decision to award half the prize despite his completing only a third of the journey. The balloon account describes hydrogen drawn from barrels containing iron and dilute sulphuric acid, flowing through a silken neck into a distending globe.
