Wonderful Balloon Ascents presents a history of balloons and balloon voyages under the subtitle Or, The Conquest of the Skies. The contents list attempts in ancient times to fly in the air, the theory of balloons and the first public balloon trial. The text says that the discovery of America and balloon travel attracted the greatest attention and gave the greatest impulse to popular feeling in their respective eras.
An ascent account describes hydrogen expanding considerably while the fall of mercury in the barometer remains scarcely perceptible. A quoted account describes turning the air-boat's prow in the desired direction with a helm supported by oars working on only one side. An observer at a height of 26,000 feet reports difficulty seeing the instruments and asks Mr. Coxwell to help read them.
