About this book
Art and language meet in Benedetto Croce's account of intuition and expression. This philosophical treatise, presented in Douglas Ainslie's 1909 English translation, develops its argument through chapters on artistic knowledge, form, taste, criticism, and the nature of speech. Ainslie's note explains that the theory is translated in full, while the historical section is shortened with the author's consent. A historical survey and an appended lecture widen the discussion beyond the main sequence of arguments.
One passage carefully distinguishes the work of a scholar, a person of taste, and a historian of art. For Croce, understanding a work and representing it historically require successive kinds of effort. Such distinctions give readers a way to examine what they mean when they judge a poem, painting, or other expression. The book suits readers who want sustained arguments about aesthetic judgment and the relationship between philosophy, literary study, and language.
