The preface describes a treatise composed almost entirely of writings printed in the proceedings of Italian academies and in Italian reviews. The preface says that collecting those writings in book form presented no difficulties because the writings formed part of a general scheme. The preface says that publication in Italian involved a few slight alterations and the addition of three brief essays as an appendix to the first part.
The discussion of historical sources considers their division into narratives and documents, or into traditions and residues or remains. The text calls that partition irrational from the empirical point of view.
