About this book
Chelsea, by G. E. Mitton, describes the parish and borough through their boundaries, tracing courses that follow streets, streams and the river. The Westbourne stream crosses Knightsbridge and forms the eastern boundary of St. Luke’s parish, while the account locates its surviving remnant where it empties into the Thames. The name of the stream survives in Westbourne Park and Westbourne Street.
The history of More’s estates records their confiscation after his death and their grant to Sir William Paulet, who occupies the house with his wife for about fifty years. The description of Beaufort Street notes its irregularly built houses, many with gardens and trees in front, and compares its width with that of Oakley Street.
