About this book
The book is titled America, Through the Spectacles of an Oriental Diplomat. The writer says that the Chinese call their nation “The Middle Kingdom”, which was supposed to be in the center of the earth. The writer calls the American nation a pleasing and unique example of the principle of democracy.
The writer says that even in the elementary schools, democracy is taught and practised. The writer says the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals should take up the question of the destruction of birds for their plumage. The writer calls the fashion of some ladies placing the complete bird on their hats a most ridiculous exhibition of bad taste. The writer asks why we dress at all, and supposes, first, protection against cold and heat.
