About this book

The woods have their own society, and here Clara Dillingham Pierson introduces the birds, squirrels, rabbits, and other forest dwellers who make up its cast. Each short tale centers on one creature and a small episode from its life, a first flight, a lesson in caution, a quarrel patched up, told in a way that slips real natural history in beside the storytelling. Pierson meant her books to be read aloud to the youngest children, and her animals talk and reason while still behaving true to their kind. The mood is calm and kindly, and most stories carry a quiet lesson about behavior or good sense. It is one of the early volumes in her 'Among the People' nature series. Free to read in PDF and EPUB.
