About this book
H. R. Playtner's book deals with the lever escapement and works through its geometry. It explains that a circle contains 360 degrees and calculates that one degree on an escape wheel 7.5 mm in diameter measures .0655 mm, about the breadth of an ordinary human hair. It also defines terms such as drop, the amount of freedom allowed for the action of pallets and wheel, and says young workmen often fail to see how to apply a degree.
Elsewhere the text turns to the ruby pin and the fork, with figures numbered in the style of Fig. 17 and Fig. 20. It works through freedom at the edge and in the slot, and calculates a ruby pin only .1178 mm wide, the size of an ordinary balance pivot. It also gives a construction for the path of the ruby pin, the radius of the safety roller and the shake allowed to the ruby pin in the slot, working in degrees and fractions of degrees.
