About this book
The preface explains that the author undertook the work to give forge students a permanent form of instruction ordinarily supplied orally by their teachers. The fuel discussion describes charcoal as almost free from impurities and identifies maple or other hard woods as producing the most satisfactory charcoal for forging. The text calls the anvil indispensable to the smith, since a skilled workman can forge or bend the various shapes and forms of metal upon it.
The description of anvils distinguishes examples made of wrought iron from those made of a special quality of cast iron. The heavy boring tool exercise involves drawing, bending, hardening and tempering, and directs the worker to harden and temper the tool to a pale yellow.
