About this book
An Artist's Letters from Japan is a book of letters by John La Farge. A note addressed to Henry Adams says that without him the writer would not have seen the place, or the things of which these notes are impressions. The writer describes the walls of a castle as great sloping ramparts of irregular blocks of masonry, with moats almost filled with the big leaves of the lotus.
The writer says everything was seen at a full run, with runners dragging the party at horse's pace. Before ancient religious paintings of Buddhist divinities, the writer recalls what was once felt at the first sight of old Italian art. The text adds an appendix, the Suruga Gobunsho, a letter of Iyéyasŭ to his daughter-in-law that defines the position of Iyémitsŭ's brother.
