About this book
Due West, or Round the World in Ten Months, is a travel narrative by Maturin M. Ballou. Its preface begins by observing that to circumnavigate the globe is, in our day, only a question of time and money. Before the preface comes a verse from The Two Gentlemen of Verona about seeing the wonders of the world abroad.
In one passage the sea-lions at the Cliff in San Francisco quarrel and tumble into the sea, and the city's school system is said to copy Boston's. In another, a steamship for Japan is delayed ten days, so the party visits the Yosemite Valley, a round trip of over six hundred miles, much of it by coach. A boat trip passes the stone steps beside the Ganges, where people wash in the sacred waters, and another passage describes the plain rooms of a monarch in the Escurial, with the guide's statistics.
