About this book

The contents of Out of the East list titles including The Dream of a Summer Day, The Stone Buddha, and In Yokohama. The travelling narrator watches little birds perched only on the top telegraph wire, their heads turned toward the road and undisturbed by the approaching travellers. The narrator cannot guess why the birds sit in that position or what they are watching or waiting for.

A story describes a rich man growing sicker while his people say an Iki-ryō is in the house and physicians eventually confess they have no more hope. A discussion of the original Self identifies that Self with the universal Mind and places the universal Self within each person alongside the effects of primal illusion.
