About this book
The account of residential chateaux says that, by the sixteenth century, luxurious dwellings with a more domestic character had sprung up beside the old feudal fortresses. The discussion describes fortresses being razed or remodelled as the chateau, distinguished from the chastel, came into being. The account says the Italian builder lent assistance and imported a profusion of detail, contributing to a distinct variety of dwelling across France.
The family chateau is described as the place where Alphonse-Marie-Louis-de-Lamartine passed the happiest years of his life, at a time when the pomp of political power had no attraction for him. Lamartine describes a dwelling without reminders of luxury, resembling a great farm whose owners live simply in a large and silent building.
