About this book
Charlotte M. Mason's An Essay Towards a Philosophy of Education begins its introduction by saying that these are anxious days for all who are engaged in education, and mentions the courage shown by men in the War. A transcriber's note explains that P.N.E.U. stands for the Parents' National Educational Union.
The table of contents lists chapters such as Children are Born Persons, with sections on the mind of a child and the mind of a school-child. One passage describes narration: a passage is read once, the child tells it back, and the mind asks itself what comes next. Mason writes that efforts to memorise weaken the power of attention, the proper activity of the mind. Verse examples include a poem about a speaking horse that carries its rider into the sky, and lines in the metre of Pope's Essay on Man on the meeting of the League of Nations.
