About this book
The preface says the present volume is in great part a reprint of articles contributed to Reviews. The preface says the first two essays are applications of the laws of mind to some prevailing Errors. The preface says the next two essays have an educational bearing, one on the subjects proper for Competitive Examinations and the other on the present position of the much vexed Classical controversy.
The text says the quality of a cheerful, buoyant temperament partly belongs to the original cast of the constitution. The text gives a conception of the Essay as something that should represent amicable co-operation, with an eye to the truth. The text says Chalmers upholds, as a thesis, the intrinsic misery of the vicious affections. The text quotes a line saying the Reformation subscriptions aimed at the prevention of covert Popery.
