About this book
Roscoe Pound's An Introduction to the Philosophy of Law gathers addresses delivered in the William L. Storrs Lecture Series, 1921, before the law school of Yale University. The text says philosophers were seeking a better basis for old customs of decision in eternal principles of right. The text also says a sure basis of authority, resting on something more stable than human will, was required for the problem of social control in the Greek city-state.
The addresses ask whether it is a postulate of civilized society that men must be able to assume that their fellow men, when they act affirmatively, will do so with due care. The text calls that postulate the basis of delictal culpa, used in the narrower sense, and of the doctrine of negligence. Lists of references name Kant, Hegel and articles in the Harvard Law Review.
