About this book
The preface describes the volume as completing the second edition of the writer’s Logic of Hegel, whose original appearance is dated to 1874. The preface says the translation issued separately in the autumn of 1892 underwent revision throughout, with faults the writer could detect amended and changes intended to clarify the interpretation. The chapter headed Why Translate Hegel? raises an objection to introducing a philosopher acknowledged by the objector to be the most obscure of all philosophers.
The discussion of philosophical language considers attention to shades of meaning, wordplay and etymologising, while allowing that apparently accidental similarities between words may accompany thought. The discussion of things describes each thing as a unity where different relations converge, or as an identity that persists through changing states.
