About this book
Ethics in Service by William H. Taft is a set of addresses delivered in the Page Lecture Series, 1914, before the Senior Class of the Sheffield Scientific School, Yale University. The preface says that it seems to the speaker that a discussion of the ethics and ideals of the legal profession would come within the purpose of the Page foundation. A passage on the teachers of law quotes a rabbinical injunction to make the knowledge of the law neither a crown wherewith to make a show, nor a spade wherewith to dig.
A passage on the Spanish War says Congress appropriated $50,000,000 to be allotted at the discretion of the President. The speaker thinks the President ought to appoint his Cabinet, the Supreme Court, ambassadors, ministers, generals and admirals, but that beyond that appointments ought to be made without bothering the President about them. A passage speaks of a growing sense of brotherhood among men, saying it is shown not only by being preached in the pulpits and emphasized in the press and in magazines, but still more by being taken up by politicians.
