About this book

An Old Meerschaum by David Christie Murray appears in Coals Of Fire And Other Stories. Chapter I opens in the market-place at Trieste under the June sunlight, where Mr. William Holmes Barndale, of Barndale in the county of Surrey, sat in shadow in front of a restaurant. Barndale says he is going on to Constantinople too, and sends his servant to take places for this evening's boat.

A letter signed Thecla Perzio says that her aunt is dead and her possessions are now hers, and that she flies to London. The letter also says that Demetri is mad and that her life is not safe for one moment. Dr. Wattiss draws a packet from his pocket and lays the precious meerschaum on the table, and an inspector reports that a man named Hodges states that he overheard violent rows after dusk.
