About this book

John Sherman; and, Dhoya is by W. B. Yeats. The contents list parts headed John Sherman Leaves Ballah, Margaret Leland, John Sherman Revisits Ballah, The Rev. William Howard and John Sherman Returns to Ballah, and a section headed Dhoya. Margaret sits on a garden seat among the bushes, telling a man the plots of novels lately read by her, and cries that the novel-writers were all serious people like him.

A speaker says the novel-writers are so hard on people like her and always make them come to a bad end. A woman wonders why her son has grown so unpractical, and sets it all down to Miss Leland and the plays, and the singing, and the belladonna. A man tells Mary he did not know she was so religious, and she answers that she often lies awake thinking about the children and is afraid a child is not taught well at home.
