An Original Theory or New Hypothesis of the Universe is by Thomas Wright, of Durham. The book describes itself as founded upon the laws of nature, and as solving by mathematical principles the general Phænomena of the visible creation, and particularly the Via Lactea. The title says the work is comprised in nine familiar letters from the author to his friend, illustrated with upwards of thirty graven and mezzotinto plates.
The text says that Ignorance is the Disgrace of Mankind and sinks human Nature almost to that of Reptiles, and that Knowledge is its Glory. A note says Cicero translated the Phænomena of Aratus into Latin Verse. One letter answers the remark that the writer left out his own habitation in his scheme of the universe by recalling that, as it is said, Aristotle told Alexander that the place he sought for was much too small to be taken notice of. The writer says that if it could be proved and confirmed by observation that the orbits in question are mathematically equal to one another, the theories of all the comets that have been justly observed might easily be perfected.
