About this book

A bracelet seller calling along a country road meets a woman whose quiet authority makes an ordinary sale feel mysterious. This scene from Toru Dutt’s narrative verse brings village life, a temple, and a possible divine presence into the same frame. Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan gathers English poems named for figures including Savitri, Lakshman, Dhruva, and Sîta, placing Indian legendary material within rhymed storytelling.

The collection also includes shorter poems about places, flowers, and memory, with titles such as Our Casuarina Tree and The Lotus. An introductory memoir by Edmund Gosse describes Dutt’s childhood in Bengal, European studies, and work in several languages.
