About this book
Nala and Damayanti and Other Poems presents translations from the Sanscrit into English verse, accompanied by mythological and critical notes. The verse describes Damayanti as Bhima's daughter, adorned with ornaments and shining among her handmaids. Nala and Damayanti hear praise of each other's virtues and begin to love without having seen one another. Nala wanders secretly into a grove by the palace's inmost court, where he sees swans with gold upon their wings.
Damayanti answers Nala's accusation with folded hands and trembling, asking him not to suspect her of shameless guilt. Damayanti's reply says that she rejected the gods and chose Nala as her lord.
