About this book
Walls, arches, columns and towers give the opening poem its view of Italy, where visible traces of former greatness prompt an appeal in the country's defense. Giacomo Leopardi addresses the country directly, linking sorrow at its condition with the sound of its children fighting abroad. Frederick Townsend's English translations bring this public voice together with poems whose titles turn toward love, memory, solitude and the natural world.
The collection also examines the restless search for happiness. In the middle passage, the daily efforts of a pilot, workshop laborers, a soldier and a merchant become examples in an argument about work and desire. Wealth, games, feasts and travel offer further occasions for considering boredom and dissatisfaction. Alongside these reflections, the speaker describes poetry's power to portray beauty and imagination's ability to provide images beyond ordinary experience. Readers interested in philosophical verse can follow the changing connections between patriotic feeling, private longing and the love of song.
