About this book
Ancient Egyptian and Greek Looms is by H. Ling Roth, Keeper, with 38 line block and one collotype illustrations, and is headed Bankfield Museum, Halifax, April 1913. The contents list a preface, a chapter on Egyptian looms, a chapter on the Greek loom and a conclusion.
The preface says that Halifax, in the heart of the great textile trade of Lancashire and Yorkshire, has been a home of the woollen manufacture since the earliest time, so that its museum should possess specimens of the tools used in the early days of spinning. The text compares published drawings of a horizontal loom from the Tomb of Chnem-hotep, among them those in Wilkinson's Manners and Customs and in Rosellini's Monumenti. The text argues that, in the linen girdle of Rameses III, the pattern begins to decrease along the middle and hence no reed could have been used. The conclusion says that the Ancient Egyptians had two forms of looms, the earlier or horizontal form dating about B.C. 2000.
