About this book
The Early History of the Hebrews is the title of a work by A. H. Sayce. The text says Amurru, “the Amorite god,” was a name which had been given by the Sumerians, the earlier population of Chaldæa, to the Syrian Hadad whom the Babylonians identified with their Ramman or Rimmon.
The text says numerous attempts have been made to identify the mountain which the Israelites regarded as the scene of the first pronouncement of their Law. Jebel Mûsa alone can claim the support of tradition, the text says, though this does not go back further than the third or fourth century A.D. The text speaks of an undertaking to ascertain the number of fighting men in Israel, not with a view to the levying of taxes, and gathers that the event happened about the middle of David’s reign, probably at the time when the struggle with Zobah was still going on.
