About this book
The preface proposes interpreting ancient rhetoric and poetic through typical theory and practice as a first step toward understanding traditions of criticism influential in the middle age. The account of Dio describes a discourse on embodiments of deity in poetry and sculpture, carefully conducted from point to point and certainly delivered according to the same plan in more than one city.
The historical discussion traces the repetition of a form of oratory in Greek and Latin throughout the Roman world over succeeding centuries. The treatment of Vergil's Æneas describes individual prowess as incidental to a dominant fortitude, with the achievement of personal glory behind the hero.
