About this book
Ancient Town-Planning by F. Haverfield is an enlargement of a paper read to the University of London as the Creighton Lecture for 1910. Chapter I, Preliminary Remarks, describes town-planning as the art of laying out towns with due care for the health and comfort of inhabitants, for industrial and commercial efficiency, and for reasonable beauty of buildings. A list of figures gives 1 Roman foot as 0.296 metres, or 0.97 English feet, and 1 Iugerum as 120 x 240 Roman feet, or 116.4 x 233.8 English feet.
The text names two conditions for town-planning: an age in which towns are being freely founded or freely enlarged, and builders with wit enough to care for the well-being of common men. The text says the blocks are usually square or nearly so, as at Turin, Verona, Pavia, Piacenza, Florence and Lucca, and less often long and even narrow rectangles, as at Modena.
