About this book
André by William Dunlap comes with a preface, a prologue, a list of characters and Acts I to V. A sketch headed Father of the American Theatre, with the years 1766 to 1839, says the life of William Dunlap is full of colour and variety. Dunlap's first play was called The Modest Soldier; or, Love in New York (1787).
In an exchange between M'Donald and Seward, M'Donald says Europe's knowledge, bought by sharp experience, should be appropriated, and Seward says "Mere theoretic dreaming!" Seward says that man can know nought but ill on earth. In an exchange between André and Bland, Bland says he has a sword and arm that never failed him, and André says "No, men will say that cowardice did urge me."
