About this book
Representative Plays by American Dramatists carries the subtitle 1856-1911: Paul Kauvar; or, Anarchy. A note on Steele MacKaye (1844-1894) discusses the sociological purpose behind Paul Kauvar; or, Anarchy. The note says timeliness was given to the initial presentment because at the moment some Chicago anarchists had been on trial, and were condemned to death.
William Dean Howells recalls that he believed the men had been convicted on an unjust ruling, and condemned for their opinions, not for a proven crime. In the play text, a character named Nanette asks Paul whether it is a lie that he signed the warrant for the Duke's arrest, and Paul answers that his name was forged. A character named Kleber reads despatches saying that Robespierre has been guillotined and that the reign of terror is at an end.
