About this book
Obiter Dicta, Second Series, is by Augustine Birrell. The preface says its writer is sorry not to have been able to persuade George Radford, who wrote the paper on ‘Falstaff’ in the former volume, to contribute anything to the second series. The preface says critics will probably be found ready to assert that the little book has no right to exist, since it exhibits nothing worthy of the name of research. The preface also says the book does not expound any theory, save the unworthy one that literature ought to please.
The text says that after five years’ retirement Milton began to feel the want of a little society. The text names Comus, Lycidas, L’Allegro and Il Penseroso as poems composed at Horton. The text says that if it be the fact that the national comedy is in decline, some other reasons must be sought than those suggested by Hazlitt in 1817.
