About this book
The full title of the book is Anecdotes of the late Samuel Johnson, LL.D. during the last twenty years of his life. An introduction says that Mrs. Thrale had a house at Streatham in which Doctor Johnson was, in days of infirmity, an honoured and a cherished friend. Mr. Johnson said that when his workshop, a detached building, had fallen half down for want of money to repair it, his father was not less diligent to lock the door every night. Mr. Johnson says he had an uncle, Cornelius Ford, and another uncle, Andrew, his father's brother, who kept the ring in Smithfield.
The writer asks him if he ever huffed his wife about his dinner, and he replies, "So often." A speaker says the life of a sailor was also a continual scene of danger and exertion, and that the manner in which time was spent shipboard would make all who saw a cabin envy a gaol.
