About this book
The foreword says the volume tries to make friends and playmates of all the animals, including creatures that provide companionship, milk, wool, or help with burdens. The foreword describes a kitten rubbing against a little girl's skirts and begging for a caress, asking whether a more lovable playfellow exists. The Lion prince complains that being a king's child makes other children run away, although the speaker is still a baby.
Mrs. Kangaroo's baby has no nice carriage to ride in and creeps into a pocket at her side when she goes calling or to market, or perhaps shopping. The Most Noble Yak wears a mantle described as a fringe of hair draping his sides and back.
