About this book

A private house where nobody interrupts, a lonely king hoping for a Christmas present and a child circling the nursery table all find a place in A. A. Milne's poems. Published in 1927, this collection of children's verse moves between small everyday concerns and elaborate games of make-believe. Christopher Robin appears in a poem about a cold, while Binker gives another child a secret companion.

The poems often let children's explanations carry the joke. A beetle kept in a matchbox becomes the cause of a disagreement with Nanny, and an emperor recites muddled arithmetic to steady himself when things go wrong. Repeated lines, rhymes and changing rhythms make the pieces suited to reading aloud. Alongside their comic incidents, they give space to solitude and to the frustration of wanting an adult to share an interesting discovery. The collection offers short scenes of childhood thought rather than a continuous story.

About the author

A. A. Milne

Milne was an assistant editor at Punch and a successful playwright before the bear, and he spent the remainder of his life mildly resenting what the bear did to that reputation. Winnie-the-Pooh appeared in 1926 and The House at Pooh Corner in 1928, both drawn by E. H.
