Twenty-one and impatient with the narrow life her father maps out for her, Ann Veronica Stanley walks out of the family home in suburban London to make her own way. She takes up biology at a great scientific college, drifts toward the suffrage movement, and falls in love with a married man who teaches in her laboratory. H. G. Wells caused a genuine scandal in 1909 by letting his heroine pursue independence, study, and desire without the usual punishment that fiction reserved for such women.
