About this book
The chapter titled A Matrimonial Hurdle shows Cassandra Raynor standing on the terrace of her great house, with the weariness of repletion in her heart. The text says it seemed the bitterest cross that she had nothing left for which to wish, and that everything good which the world could give was hers already. Bernard came in and sat down with deliberation, and he enjoyed afternoon tea, insisted on having a table to himself, and a supply of hot buttered toast. Bernard asks Miss Mallison what the news is, between mouthfuls of toast.
The Squire laughs and rallies Mary with the superficial good-nature which he always exhibits to strangers. The text says the flash of diamonds showed that there was no avowed breach with Dane, though the mystery of the deferred marriage was still to be solved.
