About this book
Antonina, or The Fall of Rome, is a book by Wilkie Collins. The preface says that, in preparing to compose a fiction founded on history, the writer thought it no necessary requisite of such a work that the principal characters appearing in it should be drawn from the historical personages of the period. In the book, the voice of Alaric is heard commanding the army to advance.
A speaker asks Antonina, with no warfare, no stern teachers and no enemy to threaten her, whether her happiness would not be complete. A passage says the voice of Goisvintha was raised once more, in hoarse, wild tones calling aloud for light and help. A passage describes the agony of pain and suspense, the awful sense of darkness and stillness, of solitary bondage and slow torment.
