About this book
A Struggle for Rome, volume three of three, is by Felix Dahn, translated from the German by Lily Wolffsohn. The section headed "Witichis" in Book IV says that, thanks to the precautions taken by Procopius, the trick had succeeded completely. The same section says that, at the moment in which the flag of the Goths fell and their King was taken prisoner, the Goths were everywhere surprised and overpowered.
Dromon lays out a plan: when Paulus keeps the watch, he will take the King his evening drink, unlock his chains, throw his mantle over him and lead him out of the prison. A woman says furiously to Cethegus, "come; we will destroy them both!", and Cethegus answers coldly that he has no reason to hate either her or him. Narses says to Alboin that there goes a remarkable piece of universal history, and Alboin calls the man leaving a great enemy to his enemies.
