About this book

Wilkie Collins divides Hide and Seek into two books, The Hiding and The Seeking, after a preface to the revised edition and an opening chapter titled A Child's Sunday Book. In one passage young Zack is made to keep Sunday quietly. His father, Mr. Thorpe, stops him when he rides Mr. Goodworth's cane up and down the room, and his grandfather lifts him up and tells him never to say die.

The chapter list also names Mr. Blyth in his studio, Madonna's childhood and her journey to London, Mr. Blyth's drawing academy, a man with a black skull-cap, a box of letters and Joanna Grice's narrative. In another passage Zack tells his gruff friend Mat all his troubles, and Mat listens gravely to the end. Elsewhere Mat stands in a front room, afraid to let Zack see his face, and takes a lock of hair from his pocket.
