About this book
The Gladiators is a tale of Rome and Judæa by G. J. Whyte-Melville. The contents list names chapters called The Ivory Gate, The Marble Porch and Hermes, among others. Julius Placidus is called a consummate soldier whose vigilance had detected the meditated attack and whose science was prepared to meet it in the most effectual manner.
The Jews catch sight of Titus on the summit, his golden armour flashing in the sun, and, with a wild yell of triumph, make one of their fierce, rushing, disorderly charges to the attack. The tribune is said to assume a manner of the utmost frankness and carelessness, and is shown repeating “Thirsty!” in a loud voice while clapping Hippias on the shoulder.
