About this book
Abbreviations and Signs is by Frederick W. Hamilton, a primer of information about abbreviations and signs, with classified lists of those in most common use. The preface says that the use of abbreviations and signs is often a convenience and sometimes a temptation, and that it is a saving of time and labor which is entirely justifiable under certain conditions. The text says that in the manuscript period abbreviations were very extensively used, partly to lighten the great labor of hand copying and partly to effect a double saving of expense.
The text says that the introduction of printing removed the pressing necessity for the extensive use of abbreviations, but that the actual use continued much longer than one would think. The lists give meanings such as Mt. for Mount, Mont, Myth. for Mythology, Nat. for National, Naut. for Nautical, and N.B. for Nota Bene, note well.
