About this book
Deductive Logic is by St. George Stock. The preface says one critic, who looked at the book in manuscript, recommended the writer to abandon the design of publishing it, on the ground that the logic was too like all other logics. The text says the direct object of logic is the study of the products rather than of the processes of thought.
The text describes inference, or reasoning, as the passage of the mind from one or more judgements to another. The text gives the example of two judgements, that whatever is made of porcelain is brittle and that this cup is made of porcelain, from which we elicit a third judgement, that this cup is brittle. The text says that from “No A is B” we cannot infer “No not-B is not-A.” A set of exercises asks the reader to show by what kind of inference each of the subjoined propositions follows from All discontented men are unhappy.
