About this book
Garrick Mallery's preliminary paper on the pictographs of the North American Indians has a contents list that goes through rock-carvings state by state, from Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia to Arizona and California, with petroglyphs in South America, British Guiana and Brazil, and pictographs in Peru.
A section on treaties describes wampum belts, with white in the middle for peace and a diamond for the council fire, and shows the Penn belt, said to be the one the Leni-Lenape sachems gave William Penn at the treaty under the elm tree at Shackamaxon in 1682. Other passages describe Maori house posts and wood-carvings, charms and fetiches, and mortuary records drawn on slabs of wood in Alaska.
