About this book
After his father's death, Jeff Benson chooses the sea over a place in his uncle's law office. Six years aboard a coasting schooner give the cheerful, athletic young man experience before a wreck and a rescue lead him into the coastguard service near his home town of Cranby. His return brings a wrestling contest with a boastful blacksmith and a reunion with Miss Millet, an elderly friend who knits socks for the poor despite her small income.
R. M. Ballantyne's children's sea story joins physical courage to questions of generosity and responsibility. In a later scene, Jeff and a captain receive dry clothes and tea at Miss Millet's house after a wreck. Their conversation moves from personal choices about drink to the losses caused by owners who neglected their ship's condition. Readers interested in coastal life will find rescue work, local friendships and practical charity closely connected.
