About this book
Asmodeus, with the subtitle Or, The Devil on Two Sticks, is a book by Alain René Le Sage. The title page credits a biographical notice of the author to Jules Janin and the translation to Joseph Thomas. The translator's preface says that when he first determined on the publication of a new edition of The Devil on Two Sticks, he had certainly no idea of engaging in a new translation.
The text says that, of all the ephemeral powers in the world, money is the most ephemeral. A character called the Spirit says he perceives in a house opposite two men who are not over-burdened with sense, one a youth of family who can neither keep money in his pocket, nor do entirely without it. The Spirit calls the other man a foreign artist, who seeks for patronage among the ladies as a portrait painter. Zambullo asks who an unhappy captive is, and the Demon replies that he is a cordelier of Navarre.
