About this book

The title page says the famous deeds of three good giants are recorded in the ancient chronicles of François Rabelais, compiled from the French by John Dimitry. The book is illustrated by Gustave Doré and A. Robida.

The preface explains that English moral sentiment, over which Macaulay was to philosophize more than a century later, had solidified in ignoring Rabelais. The list of full-page illustrations includes Friar John attacking the Bunmakers, Gargantua destroying the Castle, the Defeat of Picrochole and Pantagruel entering Paris. Pantagruel hated above all things to be left by himself, and, closely chained in his cradle, began such a stamping with his feet that he broke the foot-board of his cradle. A monster is struck by fifty darts on one side and fifty more on the other, and turns on its greasy back, as all dead fishes do.
