About this book
This is Albert S. Cook's English translation of Asser's Life of King Alfred, made from Stevenson's edition. In his preface of 1905 the translator notes that the authenticity of the Life was challenged by Thomas Wright in 1841 and by others, and that stories such as Alfred and the cakes and the raven-banner of the Danes come from interpolations by Archbishop Parker, which modern scholarship has removed.
The table of contents carries chapter headings written by the translator, among them "Alfred's Birth and Genealogy," "Battle of Aclea," "Alfred at Rome," "Judith's Position in Wessex" and "Alfred and the Book of Saxon Poems." In one passage the narrator says he spent eight months at the king's court reading books to him, and that on Christmas Eve the king handed him two letters listing the contents of the monasteries of Congresbury and Banwell, together with a silken pallium.
