About this book
At the Crossroads, by Harriet T. Comstock, says that the great turning points of life are often rounded unconsciously, and that invisible tides hurry us on. Heathcote and his sister, it appeared, had come to King's Forest for his health fifty years before, when he was twenty and Aunt Polly eighteen. Heathcote gives some staccato advice: better call sister Aunt Polly at once, and Northrup vows he would be no snag. Aunt Polly prepares the food and watches, with a true artist's eye, her guest's appreciation of it.
Maclin tells Rivers to keep clear and safe and watch the wreck. Mary-Clare comes forward with her arms opened wide and says, "You have come home, Larry! Home. Your father's home." Chapter XXII describes plain, drear days holding subtle danger and marvellous revelations, with Larry, in his superficial gripping of surface things, growing merry and childishly happy.
