About this book
Frances Waldeaux, subtitled A Novel, is by Rebecca Harding Davis, who is also named as author of Doctor Warrick's Daughter. Chapter I has the Kaiser Wilhelm about to push off from her pier in Hoboken in another minute. The people on the pier were all Germans, and there had been unlimited embracing and kissing and sobs.
Frances tells George that she never thinks of him as her son, or a man, or anything outside of her, and that when she was a girl, it seemed as if there was something in her that she must say, so she tried to write poems. Young Waldeaux bursts into a loud laugh and says, “You dear little woman! What do you know of sociology?” In the little salle below, Miss Vance sits stiffly erect while the prince talks in his shrill falsetto. George pushes aside the bushes, but at that moment Lucy rises and goes into the house.
